Celebrating the Achievements of SOUNDS Academy Cellists Abraham Kim and Justin Kang

At SOUNDS Academy, we believe in the power of music education to transform lives and empower students to reach their full potential. We’re excited to highlight the recent achievements of two outstanding cellists and SOUNDS Academy students: Abraham Kim and Justin Kang. These young musicians exemplify the passion, resilience, and excellence that we develop every day through our programs.

Justin Kang Performs with the Phoenix Symphony

SOUNDS Academy student Justin Kang recently earned a prestigious honor. After placing in the Young Musicians Concerto Competition, Justin was invited to perform a Side-By-Side Concerto with the Phoenix Symphony. This unique performance experience allowed Justin to perform alongside one of Arizona’s premier orchestras, which was an unforgettable opportunity for growth and inspiration.

Justin’s achievement is a testament to his talent and dedication, and it reflects the strength of the community that supports our students every step of the way.

Abraham Kim’s Senior Recital

This spring, SOUNDS Academy senior Abraham Kim delivered a breathtaking recital that was the pinnacle of his years of musical growth. His performance showcased a wide-ranging repertoire that showed off his technical and expressive skills. He performed with his peers, teachers, and by himself, showing how his journey has truly been one filled with teamwork and leadership. It was a celebration not only for Abraham and his family but for the entire SOUNDS Academy community, as we witnessed the culmination of his hard work.

Abraham also had the incredible opportunity to perform a concerto with the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra, a major milestone for any young musician. Sharing the stage with professional musicians, Abraham demonstrated his ability to rise to the occasion, delivering a powerful and moving performance that captured the attention of audiences and orchestra members alike. We’re so proud of his accomplishments and excited to see where his musical journey takes him next.

Upon asking Abraham about his journey and how SOUNDS Academy has helped him achieve such prestigious goals, this is what he had to say:

In 2018, I sat in the audience at my first SOUNDS Academy concert, eyes wide and heart racing. I remember watching the older students perform and wondering if I would ever be able to play like that—confident, expressive, and deeply connected to their instruments. At the time, I couldn’t afford private lessons, much less imagine myself on a stage. But that evening, something inside me shifted. I knew I wanted to be part of this community. I wanted to grow. I wanted to give. And I wanted to make music that mattered.

As I prepare to graduate and attend college, I carry SOUNDS Academy’s mission with me in everything I do. I plan to major in cello performance and possibly explore conducting, with the goal of becoming a professional musician who inspires others through collaboration, community, and character.

But beyond performances and degrees, my ultimate goal is to pay it forward. I want to create music programs for underserved youth, just like the one that changed my life. I want to teach, mentor, and perform in ways that open doors for others. I want to remind young musicians—especially those who feel like they don’t belong—that their dreams are valid, their voices are needed, and their stories matter.

The character values I’ve learned will continue to guide me. Creativity will help me find new ways to teach and perform. Leadership will allow me to build teams and empower others. Perseverance and resilience will keep me steady through the challenges of a professional music career. And responsibility will keep me grounded in service, gratitude, and purpose.

SOUNDS Academy gave me a foundation that will last a lifetime. The instruments, the lessons, the stages—all of it mattered. But what mattered most was the belief that I was worthy of opportunity. That belief changed me. And now, it’s my turn to carry that belief into the world.

We are so proud of Abraham, Justin, and all of our students who continue to strive for excellence. As we celebrate their accomplishments, we also recognize the teachers, families, donors, and partners who make these opportunities possible.

Thank you for being part of the SOUNDS Academy family!
